First Sunday

Stepping Into a New Season as a Family

Starting at a new church with kids can feel exciting and a little stressful at the same time. You want a faith home where your children are safe, loved, and learning about Jesus, and you also want space for your own heart to breathe. That is a lot to think about on a Sunday morning.

At Amarillo Fellowship Church, we care deeply about families. As a Spirit-filled, non-denominational church, we welcome people from many backgrounds, church experiences, and stories. Our goal is simple: help you and your kids grow closer to Jesus in a life-giving community.

This checklist will walk you from the parking lot to pickup, so you know what to expect with check-in, safety, nursery policies, kids’ classrooms, sensory needs, and how you can start connecting. We pray you feel encouraged by Jesus’ words, “Let the little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14). His heart is for your kids, and so is ours.

Before You Arrive: Planning a Peaceful First Sunday

A calm morning usually starts the night before. Look up our current Sunday service times and location info, and check recent updates on social media for any special fall events or schedule changes. Knowing when and where to go takes the pressure off your family.

If possible, plan to arrive a little early. That extra time helps you:

  • Find parking and kids’ check-in
  • Meet our team and ask questions
  • Show your kids their rooms before service starts

You can also talk through the plan with your kids ahead of time. A simple, “We will check you in, walk you to your room, then we will go to the main service and come back to pick you up after,” can lower anxiety, especially for younger children.

Helpful things to bring might include:

  • Diaper bag with labeled bottles or cups
  • Comfort item like a pacifier, blanket, or small stuffed animal
  • Written allergy or medical info
  • Any sensory tools, like headphones or a fidget

As a non-denominational church, we welcome families who grew up in church, those who are just coming back, and those who are brand new to faith. You do not have to have it all figured out. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” You can commit even this first visit to Him.

Check-in, Safety, Nursery, and Sensory Care

When you arrive, our kids’ check-in area will be clearly marked, and a volunteer will be ready to help. If it is your first Sunday, we will enter your family’s basic information, including names, ages, allergies, and any special instructions. Then you will receive:

  • A name tag for each child
  • A matching security tag or code for the parent or guardian

You will use that matching tag at pickup time so only the right adult can check your child out. Our kids’ areas are secure, and our team members are trained and background-checked. Hallways and doors are watched during services, and your child stays with approved leaders the entire time.

If we need you during the service, we have a simple way to contact you, which we will explain at check-in. We want you to be able to focus in worship, knowing we will let you know if your child needs you.

For nursery and toddler rooms, we follow clear guidelines for:

  • Age ranges for each room
  • Diaper-changing with privacy and clean supplies
  • Feeding policies and labeled bottles
  • Wellness standards, such as staying home with fever or active sickness

Crying and separation anxiety are normal, especially on a first Sunday. Our team will comfort your child, offer toys or soothing, and give them a little time to settle. If they stay upset, we will let you know so you can decide what feels best.

We also care about sensory needs. Let our team know if your child:

  • Struggles with loud sounds or bright lights
  • Needs a quieter spot or a seat near the back
  • Uses headphones, a weighted item, or a specific tool

We will do our best to honor that. Your insight is a gift to us. God’s heart is gentle toward little ones: “He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms” (Isaiah 40:11). That is how we want to care for your babies and toddlers too.

Kids’ Classrooms, Sunday Flow, and Parent Connection

For preschool, elementary, and preteens, we group kids in age-appropriate rooms so teaching and activities fit where they are developmentally. We watch group sizes and leader ratios so kids are known by name, not lost in a crowd.

A typical Sunday for kids might include:

  • Fun welcome and check-in to their room
  • Worship time with songs about Jesus
  • Bible teaching and memory verses
  • Games, crafts, and small group time
  • Prayer and simple faith conversations

As a non-denominational church, we aim to teach the Bible in a clear, Christ-centered way that makes sense for kids from many backgrounds. We want them to know God’s story and how it connects to their everyday life at school, at home, and with friends.

For safety, kids move between large group and small group areas under adult supervision. Restroom breaks are monitored appropriately, and pickup always happens in a set spot with your matching tag, not from random hallways.

After church, you can keep the conversation going at home by asking:

  • “What was your favorite part of kids’ church today?”
  • “What did you learn about God or the Bible?”
  • “Did you pray for anything specific?”
  • “Is there a song you remember from worship?”

While your kids are in their classrooms, we want you to be refreshed. Take that hour to be present in worship and teaching, knowing your children are safe and cared for. Beyond Sunday, you can look into small groups, serving teams, and gatherings for men and women. Non-denominational church community is about relationships built around Jesus, not labels, where real questions and real life are welcome.

If you are new, simple steps can help you connect:

  • Stop by the welcome area
  • Fill out a connect card
  • Ask a team member about groups for your season of life

Hebrews 10:24, 25 reminds us to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” and to keep meeting together. Church is not meant to be walked alone.

First Sunday with Kids FAQ and a Hopeful Next Step

Here are quick answers to some common questions parents ask on a first Sunday.

What if my child has special needs or sensory sensitivities?

Let us know at check-in or before service. Share anything that would help your child feel safe and supported, and we will work with you on a plan that fits them.

What happens if my child needs me during service?

If your child needs you, we will contact you using the method we explain at check-in. You will never be left guessing.

Can my child stay with me in the main service?

Yes, kids are welcome in the main service if that is what your family prefers. You can try kids’ ministry when you and your child are ready.

What if we are not sure what we believe yet?

You are welcome here. You do not have to have all the answers to sit, listen, and learn. We are a church where questions are allowed and grace is given.

Do we have to be members to check our kids in?

No, you do not have to be members. Guests can use all kids’ areas, following the same check-in and safety process as everyone else.

All families are welcome, including single parents, blended families, grandparents raising grandkids, and those who feel like they are starting over. God sees your desire to lead your kids well. Joshua 24:15 says, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” One simple way to live that out is to take a step toward a church home.

We would be honored to meet your family on a Sunday and help your kids feel right at home in a life-giving, non-denominational church family here in Amarillo.
